Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as as seen through flashback) Her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. Fearing stress, her parents were not keen to let the actress pursue acting until she reached the age of 18. Perry says she didn't want to be an actor in highschool but decided to start acting as a social activity while at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. Perry following her graduation from Boston University, moved into New York in search of TV roles. Perry was able to land small roles on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness led her to California in search of theater jobs. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway alongside her mother. The show featured her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in 9 episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. In 2017, Perry played a supporting role in ABC's thriller about politics Scandal which starred her father. In the same year, she was cast as the younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again as a teen version of her mother's character. She was cast in the role despite her close relationship with the character's family.
